The Birdsong Health Literacy Center of Excellence (BHLCOE) is a Hampton Roads-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing health literacy through innovative research, education, and community engagement. The BHLCOE will join forces with municipalities, businesses, nonprofit organizations, local universities, health systems, and other community organizations to create a unique region-wide health education model that will highlight Hampton Roads as a health innovation hub focused on improving the health and wellness of its residents, eliminating health disparities, and creating a competitive economic advantage for the region.
Goals & Objectives
The BHLCOE’s primary goal is to establish Hampton Roads as one of the most health literate regions in the nation by leveraging the power of multi-stakeholder collaboration and implementing effective community-driven engagement strategies. Our key strategic objectives are to:
increase community-wide awareness and knowledge of key health issues,
enhance health outcomes by empowering individuals through improved health literacy,
improve health equity by reducing health disparities,
implement best practices in health education and measure effectiveness,
promote economic development in the Hampton Roads region through a healthier and more productive workforce,
promote the importance of health literacy through national presentations and publications, and
influence health policies and practices through evidence-based research.
